The US and other countries should encourage the use of electric and gas scooters in cities to avoid congestion and reduce carbon emissions.

If you travel to any modern European city, you will see countless scooters lined up on every sidewalk, crammed into every entryway, and generally lodged into any crack or crevice in which a car won’t fit.

On the roads you will see them behaving much as pedal bikes here, passing in between lanes, driving on road shoulders and, of course, parking anywhere they aren’t causing an obstruction. The Fairfax police  department’s two new electric scooters, vehicles that look like a cross between a skateboard and a mountain bike will give officers greater mobility and flexibility, said inventor Rob Fruechtenicht, a Fairfax resident.

“It really falls into what Fairfax is all about,” Fruechtenicht told the Fairfax Town Council at its meeting Wednesday. “They’re green, no-emission vehicles.
